Cultural Intelligence

What is Cultural Intelligence? Cultural Intelligence is, “an individual’s capability to function effectively across national, ethnic, and organizational cultures.” Ang & Van Dyne, Handbook of Cultural Intelligence

On this page you will find various insights into the world of Cultural Intelligence and how it can have direct implications on the success of your organization.

Culture shock arrives inevitably for any international business leader; it has many faces, and can wreak havoc for even the most well-mannered and skilled professional.

Possessing a high Cultural Intelligence Quotient, or CQ, will dramatically increase your likelihood of successfully navigating the pitfalls of culture shock. Perhaps you are currently on an international assignment, or considering accepting one. Approximately 40% of all ex patriate assignments terminate early and of those early terminations, 99% are the result of cultural issues. The cost of failed ex pat assignments is huge, ranging from $250,000 to upwards of $1.25 million.

In recent years, researchers have made a direct and incontrovertible link between international success and one’s CQ.

High CQ = better cross-cultural performance and decreased likelihood of prolonged debilitating culture shock.

Low CQ = low cross-cultural performance and greater likelihood of prolonged, debilitating culture shock.

I’ve recently posted a video online about the consequences of, and the solutions to, culture shock.
